On 16 October 2014, Brazil notified the WTO Secretariat for a request for consultations with Indonesia concerning certain measures imposed by Indonesia on imports of chicken meat and chicken products.
According to Brazil, the Indonesian measures in question effectively prohibit Brazilian chicken meat and chicken products from entering the Indonesian market. These measures appear to be inconsistent with Indonesia's obligations under the WTO's Agreement on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures, the Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade, the Agreement on Agriculture, the Agreement on Import Licensing Procedures, the Agreement on Preshipment Inspection, and the GATT 1994, Brazil contends.
Request for consultations formally initiates a dispute in the WTO. If after 60 days, parties have failed to resolved the dispute over the consultation, the complainant may request adjudication by a panel.
